Women’s Awards 2010
Congratulations are extended to Emer O’Dowd who received the Player’s Player of the Season (2009-10) award at the recent annual Galwegians Prize-giving and Dinner Dance.
O’Dowd has been a Galwegians stalwart for many years but surpassed previous performances during the 2009-2010 season, the end of which saw Galwegians finish fifth in the Women’s AIL. The versatile forward had a prolific year both on and off the pitch with her dedication and efforts extending to successfully taking on the role of pre-season fitness coach, and continuing her duties as a member of the Women’s Committee.
Women’s Rugby – Are you staring at my crisps?
All seems to be hunky dory in the world of Irish Women’s Rugby at the moment. The national team is preparing for the forthcoming IRB Women’s World Cup in London, while the provincial teams are commencing their preparations for this year’s Interprovincial campaign, which will see the best players in the country fight for the national title over a four game series. The popularity of the women’s game is at a record high with over 2,000 players currently registered nationwide. Needless to say it will be hard to escape the growing focus on women’s rugby over the coming years – so why not join in?
Galwegians Women’s Rugby squad, Connacht’s largest women’s rugby club, wishes to invite new players to try the game for themselves and get involved in this global phenomenon. Women over 18 of all experience and levels, including absolute beginners, are invited to come along – the present squad is made up of both former and current Tag Rugby, Basketball, Camogie, Gaelic Football and Soccer players, as well as those trying a team sport for the first time.
However, if the rough and tumble of competitive rugby isn’t appealing, Galwegians Women’s squad offers the chance to participate commitment-free in our pre-season fitness sessions. Once again under the auspices of strength and conditioning coach Emer O’Dowd, the team’s sessions will this year be open to members of the public. Fitness training starts from Tuesday 20th July, at Crowley Park (7pm), with a charge of €2 per session for all attendees.
